Pond Walk, written by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace, is a childrens book about ponds and the natural life found in them. Buddy, a young bear takes a stroll with his mother to Pete’s Pond, seeking a turtle. Through Buddy's observations, plant and animal life are introduced, including the Whirligig beetle, salamander, pond skater, cattail, water lilies. The book even makes the distinction between a dragonfly and damselfly, and briefly discusses limnology, the the study of inland waters. Buddy does manage to glimpse a turtle, and also spots one in the clouds and in a rock formation.
The rich illustrations are unique and varied, consisting of cut paper, photographs, and colored pencil, making it a visually appealing and informative. There is also a "make a rock turtle" project at the end of the book.
The book is categorized as pre K through 3rd grade; to me it would likely fit best in the 1-2 range. The book offers enough detail to serve as a conversation starter about pond life and to get the young reader to ask "Why?" It retails for approximately $10 new on Amazon and around $3 used on ebay.
