An update on the The Olentangy River Wetland Research (ORWRP) the research and teaching wetland park located at Ohio State University recently threatened with a natural gas pipeline. Due to outcry of the parks supporters the universities administration wisely shelved the plans to run a large natural gas pipeline under the wetland.  This victory is important, but what makes me take a step back is the chutzpah of the administration to propose such a plan, knowing full well the reputation of the staff and the site. If this project can almost be railroaded through, how easily can  projects elsewhere, without the resources and reputation of the ORWRP successfully fight a similar proposal?

PBS Nature just came out with a documentary on the efforts to restore Iraq's  Mesopotamian marshes fed by both the waters of the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers was once twice the size of the Everglades, at 6,000 square miles. Due to intentional water diversion and drainage under Saddam's reign, the marshes have shrunk to 10% of it's original size.

Beginning in 2003, Azzam Alwash has struggled to restore the historic wetlands area for both Iraqi citizens and wildlife including many unique bird species, including the Basra reed warbler.  which have begun to repopulate the area.
