February 2, 2009 is World Wetlands Day!

World Wetlands Day (WWD) was celebrated for the first time in 1997, marking signing of the Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971.  Each year, citizens, government agencies and local communities have taken advantage of the opportunity to raise public awareness of wetland benefits.

This year's theme is Upstream-Downstream, Wetlands connect us all. with a focus on river basins and their management.

A  new feature of the website is the Wetland Mapper , a  good jumping off point to easily find wetlands in your local area and state.  Using a freely available USGS database and Google Maps, a mashup was created to map and detail over 7,000 swamps and wetlands in the United States. The information available about each site is limited (see below),  but we are looking to expand the data available about a particular site.

Example:

Name: Ballona Wetlands
Latitude: 33.959999 Longitude: -118.440002
Elevation: 2 Meters
USGS Map Name: Venice
County Name: Los Angeles

In the near future, the mapping tool will also be expanded  to include RAMSAR and other wetlands worldwide, with a database expected to top 50,000 records and a refined user interface.
